Many people do not understand that in the State of Ohio, Private Investigators must be licensed. Engaging in the practice of investigations without a license in Ohio is a violation of the Ohio Revised Code 4749. Law enforcement officers, past and present are not exempt from this law.
The benefits of using a licensed private investigator are significant. Licensed Private Investigators must have specific background requirements to even apply for a license. These requirements include a verifiable impeccable reputation in their community, along with certifiable hours of experience commensurate with a relevant work history. They then apply to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of Homeland Security, and if the application meets the criteria outlined in the Ohio Revised Code, they are scheduled for an exam. Once the exam is passed, the division mandates that private investigators carry malpractice insurance. Un-licensed private investigators do not give you these reassurances. Using an unlicensed private investigator violates the licensure laws, which will compromise your case when it gets into court, and could be reason for an appeal based on any information the unlicensed private investigator brings to the case.
